SURFING

During the months from June until October Kenya’s coast is blessed with waves sizing from 1.5m up to 3m on big days. On windy days the conditions on the reef are ideal to ride the waves with kite and directional board. On light wind days H2o offers surfing beginner lessons in the shore break right in front of Kenyaways Kite Village, Galu Beach, as well as rentals of 7’ and 8’ soft top surf boards. The surf conditions in Kenya are very dependent on wind and tides, but if timed correctly, the waves can be a lot of fun and great for beginners to learn in.

Surfing is one of the most complex and difficult sports out there and if you have never surfed before it is highly recommended to take at least 3 days of tuition in a row to get a good grasp of surfing. Starting off on the beach your instructor will give you an introduction and teach you how waves are formed, about swells, tides, rip currents, and surf etiquette. Step by step you will practice the basic surfing techniques on the beach, learning how to position yourself on the board, the proper stance, and how to pop up (transitioning from lying down on your belly to getting up on your feet, also known as the take off).

Once you move on into the water, you will be accompanied by the instructor at all times, who will give tips and pointers. For your first lessons, you’ll practice in knee to waist high waves and will stay close to shore.

With a big surfboard, a good instructor, and the right conditions, you can get on your feet in the very first day!

Depending on the package that you choose, you can either join lessons in a small group (semi-private, 2 people per instructor) or private 1-on-1 lessons. Whatever you choose, you can be assured that you will get personalized attention from the coach.
